Isn't technology fantastic? There are so many things you can do with it. From music videos to Candy Crush to movies, it fulfills our craving for brain stimulation when we are bored. However, whether we know it or not, it serves a greater purpose than this. It helps us connect with others.
For example, when I watch Korean-Pop music videos on my phone or laptop, I am actually learning about another culture. I get a taste for how they dress, what their music sounds like, how they dance, and what their language is like. I even learn a little Korean myself when I look up the English translation or watch the lyrics video.
Games are another way in which technology helps us interact with others. Of course, there is multi-playing gaming, but something as simple as Candy Crush can help us understand ourselves and each other better. If you've played Candy Crush, you know that there is this giant trail on which you can see what level your friends are on. This communicates to us where our skills are in comparison with others. In fact, this could be a good motivation to better our skills.
Last, but not least, movies are a huge influence brought to us by technology, that helps us understand our world and ourselves better. As with K-Pop, I learn about different cultures from movies. Pocohontas taught me about Indians, Mulan taught me about Chinese traditions, and Hunger Games gave me an insight into what direction this country is heading in. We can also learn about ourselves when we relate to the characters. The characters can even push us to be more like them. I know Mulan did. She makes me want to be brave.
That being said, technology is very good for you. You can learn from it. You can interact with others through it. You can let it shape you into something better. Don't let it take advantage of you, but take advantage of it.
