The week has finally arrived for spirit week. It came and went really fast, and I'm glad I participated for each day of this week. Monday was PJ day. Tuesday was nerd day. Wednesday was 70s day (on which I wore a huge afro). Thursday was twin day. It's technically not twin day, though. It's more like a day when you match with however many people you want. On that day, my class wore our senior shirts. Lastly, Friday, today, was purple and gold day. I saw a lot of Jersey's and cheerleading uniforms, and pretty much the entire student body decked out their eagle pride. Here's to celebrating the end of the basketball season, hoping the boys win their district game.
This weekend, a took a trip to Orlando to A) visit UCF B) attend my uncle's wedding reception Before I even visited the campus, it was already my first choice because it's strongest in my major and minor compared to the other schools I'm applying to. But, once I got there, my mind was blown away! It is a truly beautiful campus complete with a forest walkway, a fountain, and more. Activities there include swimming in a huge pool, rock climbing, kayaking, theatre, and concerts (which are free for UCF students). They have many different options for housing, and I got to see Hercules. It had a lobby with pots and pans and a two room suite. Each room had two beds, two desks, a fridge, microwave, and TV with cable! It's spacious, too! They have interview simulators that prepare you for the real world, and there are several places in Orlando that solely want UCF alumni. The Bookstore is very similar to Barnes and Noble, complete with café and all, and even has some of the books I like to read (Maximum Ride). As if that's not enough, they have other cool stores I might explore, like Gamestop or a skateboard shop. They have so many awesome restaurants that don't cost a lot of money (Asian food, pizza, Burger King, Subway, Chipotle, etc.). The people there a helpful in directing you where you need to go and settling things with admissions. There are also many cool opportunities to make money there, such as being a guenie pig for the psychology department. This entails simple tasks such as playing videogames, sleeping, and talking. The only problem I'll have is getting used to the size of the school. After all, it is the nation's second largest university. After walking all over the campus, I had no time to rest because I had to go to my uncle's wedding reception. He got married to his wife on a cruise just that week. The food was good, and so was the music. It was good to see my cousins and new cousin-in-laws again! All in all, this was a weekend I won't forget. I've been looking forward to Spiritual Emphasis Week for a while now, and the wait has been worth it.
A few of the things Mr. Chase told us that impacted me the most was to not starting the race incorrectly and the three K's. First, he used the analogy of track to explain that some people are living the Christian life but haven't been converted yet. That is, they didn't begin from the starting line. Second, he told us to never do these three K's: kan't, kompromise, and kwit (these are in his vocabulary!). Never listen to people who tell you that you can't. I even wrote a blog about this during the beginning of my eleventh grade year concerning joining Glee Club. Also, don't compromise your faith and values for a night of fun and passion or friends. Last, NEVER QUIT! As the cliché saying goes, "Quitters never prosper," ...or was it "cheaters never prosper"? Both are still true. The point it is, stay committed to what you're doing. That's why I'm going to try my hardest to stay committed to track. Wish me luck, and pass on these words of wisdom. I know you guys were expecting a blog on Christmas break yetlove the unexpected, but I really love Christmas. So you guys will have to put up with it for the next few minutes (or scroll down to more interesting blogs)!
1. Deliver Gifts I gave Gueshnia a "The Little Mermiad" CD and Olna a plush Minnie Mouse on Christmas Day, and it was good to see them over the break. I really wanted to see Giveline, but she lives rather from me, so my Dad said no. I did, however, get to give her the gift first thing when we resumed school. During the break, my friend came to exchange gifts with me, and it was good to see her, too. 2. Drawing How could I not? There were a lot of drawings I did over the break, but the one below has to be my favorite because of all the details I entailed concerning value. 3. Shopping I didn't go shopping only for others, but also for myself! The first thing I did was spend my Barnes n' Noble gift card! I got the full Avatar: The Promise series, the entire volume of Narnia, a Betty and Veronica comic book, and books for my parents. Also, I bought two pairs of sandals (one of which I share with my mom), two pairs of heels, a skirt, floral lace top, and a purse! I felt so good wearing them. 4. Soup Joumou As my friend Cedrick nicely put, "it tastes like heaven." You better believe I had two bowls of it along with some Haitian bread! I'm sure you probably had some, although most don't know the history behind it. Haitians used to be enslaved by the French, and they couldn't eat squash because the French considered it a delicacy. Therefore, when they won independence on New Year's Day, they celebrated with squash soup, or soup joumou. Comment below on how your break was! |
